The Weird Family
Portrait Gallery
3rd grade students of the Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy in Silver Spring
Hi, we’re the Weird Family. Welcome to our home library where we hang our family portraits. Displayed are mom, dad, our brothers and sisters, extended family and pets. These portraits were each executed by the 3rd grade students of the Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy in Silver Spring. Besides drawing, the Berman 3rd graders excel at sewing/fiber projects, inventing constructions, painting, modeling clay, and paper crafts, like origami, sign-making, and book-making. Our instructor, Renee Montgomery of Chevy Chase DC, uses a teaching method called T.A.B. (“Teaching Artistic Behavior”), an emergent technique focusing on Making and Creativity-Confidence, where we learn through self-directed inquiry.

Super Bowl
14-Year-Old Benji on Fessenden Street

Benjy on Fessenden Street is 5.5-years-old
A Pool, a Fountain, and Some Lines and Shapes
Benjy’s work is inspired by a summer trip to Cape Cod and his exploration of shapes and patterns at school.
Blue pool: “This is the swimming pool from Cape Cod. See that line? It’s not usually black in a swimming pool, but it’s the rope. There’s a less deep side and a deeper side. And I didn’t show the stairs because I didn’t have, like, room. That’s all I know about this.”
Diptych: “This
one’s showing you about when they’re building a fountain. One of them is the
drawings, like the blueprints for how to make a foundation, like the design of
a fountain, and the other is a finished fountain when it’s all builded. That
green’s some water going in, and then there’s the fountain going. That’s the
stuff to see how it works, even though they’ve already finished it. That’s all
I know about this one.”
About the artist: Benjy, age 5.5, is a kindergartner at Janney Elementary. He likes to “play at playgrounds, and go to lots of fun stuff.”

Rowan Magnell, GDS Student from Arlington, VA
Needle felting: "Tributaries"
Rowan Magnell (they/them) is an artist and student based in Arlington. They work primarily in sequential art and zines, though they also use oil paint, watercolor, and fibers. Their art is a mode of storytelling, through which they explore worlds both known and unknown, and the complex lives within.
“Tributaries” is the first in a series of fiber works focusing on the interdependence of humanity and the environment through a fantastical lens. Needle felting is a repetitive, time-consuming process that transforms loose wool roving into an interconnected whole. Similarly, “Tributaries” tells a story about the myriad parts that make up an ecosystem, the varying speeds at which time passes for living organisms, and a tired serpent whose job it is to unite these individual strands and perceptions of life into a gargantuan, fantastical garden whose only constant is its watershed.

She chose a three-dimensional wood panel for her artwork for the Little Gallery to give the piece some depth, with stars on multiple surfaces.
